The Ford Thunderbird’s initial success did not stop designers and engineers from finding ways to improve their new ‘personal car’.

In fact, it was the need to find more trunk space that inspired one of the Thunderbird’s signature features, the continental kit. Another T-Bird trademark, the removable porthole hardtop was designed in answer to Ford Division General Manager Lewis Crusoe’s request for better rear quarter visibility to negotiate an oblique intersection near his home.

Another Crusoe suggestion was flip-out front vender vents that answered the need for better ventilation. To counter extra weight of the continental kit, Ford offered the optional P-Code 312 CI V-8 that powers this beautiful Colonial White example. Based on the cast iron Y-Block and rated at 225 HP, it features a single 4-barrel carburetor, finned aluminium valve covers and chromed air cleaner, and it is mated to a Ford-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission.

Generously outfitted with fender skirts, chromed grille bullets and Firestone Champion whitewall tyres on chrome wire wheels with spinners, it also offers Master Guide power steering and power brakes. Showing a believed correct 44,000 original miles, this Baby Bird’s black and white interior incorporates tinted glass, a padedd dashboard with full instrumentation, power windows and updated sound system.
